Why It Matters
For the community. Accessibility is not a favour to a few families. It is what allows elders, people recovering from illness or injury, parents with strollers, and people with disabilities of every kind to take part in community life. A masjid built for everyone serves everyone.
For the masjid. Certification gives your board a clear standard to work toward, a public signal that you take inclusion seriously, and a listing families search when choosing where to pray. Many of the physical upgrades also qualify for federal and provincial accessibility funding, and MUHSEN can point you toward it.
For our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) built a community where everyone had a place. When he once turned away from a blind companion, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, the Qur’an itself corrected him, and from then on he honoured that companion publicly, appointing him to call the prayer and to lead the city in his absence. Inclusion is not an add on to our tradition. It is the tradition.
“Whoever removes a worldly hardship from a believer, Allah will remove from him a hardship on the Day of Resurrection.” (Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him)
