Families with disabilities and their caregivers often face challenges in participating in community Iftars during the holy month due to a lack of accessible accommodations. In Toronto Mississauga, Eastern Canada, we hosted our first Iftar in honour of families with individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. It was a beautiful day dedicated to community building.
Some of the accommodations we provided included on-site respite, a sensory station, and ASL interpretation. We were very mindful of food sensitivities and conducted thorough food screenings. Our program featured brief speeches to ensure that no one would feel overstimulated, as our goal was to honour our guests.
A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers and everyone who helped us make this event a success!
We envision an annual Iftar in every city across Canada that honours and is dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities, along with their caregivers and families.
